UMIAM:

A three-day training programme on ‘Livelihood improvement of hill farmers through scientific livestock based integrated cluster farming’ was organised by Division of Animal and Fishery Sciences, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, at Borkhatsari village (Umling block), Ri Bhoi, from July 25 to July 27.

The programme was organised under the Biotech Based Programme for Societal Development funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

A total of 60 beneficiaries took part in the training programme.

The main objective of the programme was to promote livestock based integrated cluster farming as income generating avenues throughout the year.

Integrated farming system is an interdependent, interrelated production systems based on few crops, animals and related subsidiary enterprises in such a way so as to maximize the utilization of nutrients of each system and minimize the negative effect of these enterprises on environment. It is based on concept that ‘there is no waste’ and ‘waste is only a misplaced resource’ which become valuable material for another product. The system will help poor small farmers, who have very small land holding for crop production and a few heads of livestock to diversify farm production.

Inputs in the form of veterinary medicines, vermibeds, extension folders etc., were distributed among the beneficiaries.

The programme was organized by Dr. Meena Das, Senior Scientist and PI of the project .
