If not addressed, unemployment will brew militancy: UDP

The Party also expressed happiness on the developments concerning the peace talks with proscribed HNLC.

SHILLONG:

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has observed that the unemployment problem in the state is alarming and if not addressed in time, it will bring about many challenges such as militancy.

Urging the government to address the issue, the party’s general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, “The unemployment problem in the state is quite alarming and we have so many of our young, bright youths but if we do not create opportunity for them then naturally their frustration will increase and it will bring all kinds of problems to the society.”

Gunning for the need to channelise the youth’s energy in the right direction, Mawthoh stressed on creating employment opportunities for the youth. “We need to create those opportunities I am not saying it is easy because Meghalaya is a small state and we are not an income generating state but we have to start somewhere,” he said.

The UDP leader also observed the parents too are concerned about the future of their children and if not addressed the issue will grow and bring trouble for the law and order situation in the state.

“This is why we need to address the problem properly. We need to channelise the energy of the youth in the right direction. I feel that the government which is going to come in 2023 needs to be more focused on the youth,” he said.

Expressing happiness on the developments concerning the peace talks with proscribed militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Mawthoh said, “We are happy that some positive developments are going on.  We would like to welcome our brothers in the HNLC to come forward and have this important dialogue with the government and other stakeholders so that we can bring lasting peace in the state.”
