India will soon have digital university: President Kovind

The digital university will provide education in different Indian languages and ICT formats, he said.

GUWAHATI:

President Ram Nath Kovind, on February 26, said that India will soon have a digital university and urged Tezpur University in Assam to become an active stakeholder in this initiative by providing high-quality digital content in Assamese as well as other languages of the Northeast.

“The digital university will provide education in different Indian languages and information and communication technology (ICT) formats,” he said, adding that the 2020 National Education Policy (NEP), introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifies digital education as one of its goals.

Speaking at the 19th convocation of Tezpur University, the President said the initiative will provide students world-class quality education with a personalised learning experience at their doorsteps.

Kovind expressed hope that Tezpur University will contribute meaningfully to India’s emergence as a prosperous and stronger nation with the “students of today turning to decision-makers”.

Among other goals, the President of India praised the extraordinary efforts of the people of Assam towards renewable energy initiatives, organic farming and conservation efforts, alluding to his visit to the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR).

Assam chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the event as the Guest of Honour, congratulated the graduating students for successful completion of their degree and diploma courses, and announced Assam government’s intention to construct a multi-purpose hall for the university.

“There is a difference between education and knowledge. The school-college education system makes student life suitable. Knowledge, on the other hand, is a special form of life itself,” Sarma stated.

He also reminded the gathering that Tezpur University was established as an offshoot of the historic Assam Accord and recalled the contribution of martyrs of Assam Agitation movement.

Also present at the event were Assam Governor and Chancellor of Tezpur University, Jagdish Mukhi and Vice-Chancellor, VK Jain.

A total of 1,249 students received their degrees and diplomas in the Convocation, out of which 401 were undergraduates, 717 postgraduates, 68 PG Diplomas and 63 PhDs. Forty-five toppers from various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes received gold medals at the do.
