SHILONG:
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader Mukul Sangma said that irrespective of the number of MLAs the opposition has, it must stand up to the expectations of the people.
“We cannot create a vacuum and therefore, irrespective of our numbers, we remain focused and we will continue to be committed, utilising the time optimally,” Sangma said.
It may be mentioned that in November last year 12 of the Congress MLA defected to the AITC leaving the Grand Old Party with only five legislators. The “last five” Congress MLAs too were suspended by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) after they extended support to the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition.
Sangma said that the changing political dynamics in the last few months have given him reasons to be more focussed as an elected representative, while responding as the opposition.
He also said that in a democracy, it is crucial to sustain the spirit of democracy and ensure that both the government and opposition play their respective roles effectively.
