SHILLONG:

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organiation (HITO) East Jaintia Hills district has alleged that medical staff at Jowai Civil Hospital, West Jaintia Hills are refusing to treat patients coming from East Jaintia Hills.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, general secretary of HITO Wanbun Dhkar said that most of the patients from Khliehriat Civil Hospital are referred to Jowai Civil Hospital due to lack of medical equipment, making it difficult for patients to travel upto Jowai.

To make matters worse, even after reaching Jowai Civil Hospital, Dkhar said patients are shunned by the medical staff.  “The doctors and staff of the Jowai Civil Hospital refuse to treat the patients who are from Khliehriat as it is a different district. It is a burden to the hospital to treat all the people from West and East Jaintia Hills,” he said.

“The recent inauguration and upgradation of Khliehriat Community Health Center to full-fledged Civil Hospital is just in theory and not in practical,” he said.

On the other hand, he said that the organisation met the Director of Health Services (DHS) Aman Warr in connection with the demand to provide X-ray machines and other medical equipment at Khliehriat Civil Hospital.

Dkhar said that Warr has assured that in the coming days, the equipment such as the X-ray and scanning machines will be provided to the Khliehriat Civil Hospital.
