Kynshi Hydel Project yet to see light of day even after 11 years

The union has decided to seek clarification from the government on the delay of the said project and urged the MLAs and ministers to take note of this matter.

NONGSTOIN:

The much-delayed Kynshi Hydel Power Project has raised the concerns of the Synjuk ki Trai Khyndew (Union of land owners) of Warsanlyngdoh, Sangriang, and Mawpun Area, who felt that the project that was sanctioned 11 years ago could have benefited the area if completed on time.

The union has decided to seek clarification from the government on the delay of the said project and urged the MLAs and ministers to take note of this matter.

According to the vice president of this union, Roshem Marthong, when completed, this power plant can generate up to 450 MW, while informing that the government had given the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to one Athena Company in 2007 to implement the project, wherein the DPR was submitted.

The union felt that this project could help develop the villages surrounding the plant, besides benefiting the West Khasi Hills district and the state as a whole in terms of power generation. “There are some villages that still lack motorable roads; hence, with this project, proper roads would be constructed and the entire area would be developed,” Marthong said.

He further stated that as per the agreement signed between the company and the company, the project cost was estimated at Rs 5 thousand crore rupees, out of which 1 per cent has been allotted to the development of the area, and the company would distribute about 12 per cent of the electricity to the state and 2 per cent for the villagers besides other employment opportunities.
