Laying of DI pipes hinders traffic movement in Upper Shillong

According to a police source, the excavation work is being carried out by contractors and labourers without intimating the traffic department for necessary arrangements.

SHILLONG:

The excavation and laying of Ductile Iron (DI) pipes of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department on the National Highway-40 at 7th Mile in Upper Shillong on February 7 obstructed the smooth flow of traffic, much to the annoyance of both the public and traffic personnel.

According to a police source, the excavation work is being carried out by contractors and labourers without intimating the traffic department for necessary arrangements.

Since morning, vehicles were being diverted from the kacha road due to which the movement of vehicles was hindered.

The heavy flow of vehicles escorting the candidates for filing of nomination on the last day today, coupled with excavation work, have irked the commuters stuck in traffic for hours.

“My opinion is that if excavation work is to be carried out, it should have been done at night when the flow of traffic is less,” a police source said.
