Lone Tura student in Ukraine’s Kyiv reaches Romanian shelter camp

She informed that a Jaintia youth, Sardonyx, is also with her in the camp, which is currently housing over 3,000 Indian students.

Tura:

Tura’s Darcy Fiona Marak, the only Garo student studying at Kyiv Medical University, managed to reach a shelter camp near Romania’s border from Ukraine on March 2.

Sharing a video of the camp exclusively with The Meghalayan, she informed that a Jaintia youth, Sardonyx, is also with her in the camp, which is currently housing over 3,000 Indian students.

She further informed that the students were taken in batches to different shelter camps in Romania after crossing over to the country from Ukraine.

“After crossing the Ukrainian border, we were taken for immigration check and then transported to the refugee shelter that has many tents made of tarpaulin,” she informed over the phone.

Earlier on February 28, she had informed The Meghalayan that she is headed towards the Hungary border along with 20 other Indian students to try and leave war-torn Ukraine and return to the state.

“We are going to try the Hungary border first. If that does not work out, we’ll head towards the Romania border,” Marak had said on Monday.

She had further said that their escape is being aided by Ukrainian citizens. “The Indian embassy has not been receiving our calls so we have not received any help from them,” she had said, adding that the situation is still worrisome in Kyiv.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Embassy in Ukraine issued a second advisory asking all Indian nationals in Kharkiv to “immediately” leave the city in the light of the deteriorating situation in the country.

“For their own safety and security, they must leave Kharkiv immediately repeat immediately in the light of the deteriorating situation (sic),” the advisory read.

It further asked the students to proceed immediately. “Those students who cannot find vehicle or buses and are in railway stations can proceed on foot to Pisochyn (11 km), Babai (12 km) and Bezlyudivka (16 km)… (sic)” it said.

The embassy stressed that Indians must reach the above-mentioned settlements by 6 pm Ukrainian time.
