Man dies as electric wire falls on him while riding two-wheeler

Eyewitnesses on the scene reported that the accident was likely caused by the improper maintenance of the electrical infrastructure by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

UMDEN:

In an incident that occurred on July 26, 2023, Neverson Nongkseh, aged 41, lost his life after an electric wire fell on him while he was riding his two-wheeler from Umden to his village, Umshaken.

Eyewitnesses on the scene reported that the accident was likely caused by the improper maintenance of the electrical infrastructure by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). The wire in question had been covered with bamboo and trees and had apparently not been regularly checked. “The incident took place amidst heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, possibly contributing to the wire’s disconnection and subsequent fall on Neverson Nongkseh,” one of the witnesses said.

Toris Nongkseh, a relative of the deceased, called for better maintenance of the electrical infrastructure to prevent similar accidents in the future. The family also requested the Department to provide an ex-gratia payment due to their loss, holding the Department accountable for the unfortunate incident.

The Nongpoh Police Station was alerted about the incident and responded promptly by transporting Neverson Nongkseh’s body for post-mortem examination.

Further updates on the investigation are yet to be disclosed.
