Man gets 20-years rigorous imprisonment for drug peddling

This was the first-ever judgement of the court on drugs trafficking case No 505/20 registered in Dhing police station under sections 21C and 18B of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

GUWAHATI:

A man was sentenced to 20-years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by a court in Assam’s Nagaon district on December 17 for his involvement in drug trafficking.

This was the first-ever judgement of the court on drugs trafficking case No 505/20 registered in Dhing police station under sections 21C and 18B of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

While pronouncing the judgement, Nagaon District and Session Judge Nilkamal Nath also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the convict, Habil Ali failing which he has to spend another 18 months in jail.

The court, however, acquitted two of his accomplices Batu Alom and Mofidul Haque for the lack of sufficient evidence of their involvement in the case.

Habil Ali was arrested by a team of police led by then additional superintendent of police Mohan Lal Meena following a search operation conducted at his house at Sonari gaon on December 3, 2020.

In the search operation, the police also recovered 2 kg of heroin, 100 kg of ganja, 1 kg of opium and Rs 10 lakh cash from his house.

Welcoming this move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “GOOD NEWS… In a big boost to our efforts in combating the drug menace, drug peddler Habil Ali, who was caught by @nagaonpolice for trafficking 2 kg Heroin, 100 kg Ganja, 1 kg Opium, and Rs 10 lakh cash, got convicted today for 20 yrs. Compliments to @assampolice.”
