Man mauled to death by a bear in Mizoram

A church elder or Upa, and occasionally a sand miner, R Chhunthangvunga’s body was found in the jungle with multiple injuries by his friends.

AIZAWL:

A 54-year-old man, identified as R Chhunthangvunga of Lungkawlh village in Mizoram’s Serchhip district, was mauled to death by a wild bear, on March 1.

A church elder or Upa, and occasionally a sand miner, his body was found in the jungle with multiple injuries, by his friends.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the deceased and his 14-year-old son were camping and mining sand at Tiau river on the Indo-Myanmar border along with several other sand miners. Following their meal, he had ventured into the forest to collect wild edibles when he came face-to-face with a female bear with two cubs.

Though Chhunthangvunga fellow miners rushed to the spot after hearing the screams, they found his body and also saw the two bear cubs. The female bear, however, was nowhere to be seen.
