AIZAWL:
A constable of 2nd India Reserve (IR) Battalion was killed and 11 other personnel were injured in a road mishap at Tamenglong, Manipur, on the intervening night of March 2.
The deceased constable, identified as K Lalawmpuia from Mizoram, succumbed to his injuries in the district hospital. Following the post-mortem, the body of Lalawmpuia was airlifted to Aizawl, and police personnel received it at Lengpui Airport. His funeral will be held at his home in the Champhai district.
Informing the State Assembly about the same, Home Minister, Lalchamliana, said the incident happened when the pick-up truck they were travelling in met with an accident inside the Tamenglong College campus at around 1:30 am. The cause of the accident was brake failure, he further added.
“One of the injured personnel, Lalawmpuia, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries and was declared ‘brought dead’ at the district hospital,” he said.
Offering his sincere condolence to the bereaved family, he further informed that of the 11 injured police personnel, five were referred and subsequently admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal.
Notably, 10 companies of Mizoram Armed Police were deployed in the Manipur elections.
According to official sources, two companies of Mizoram police were stationed at Tamenglong College. The entrance of the road is steep and narrow, making it inaccessible to heavy trucks. The ill-fated pickup truck was used to transport the personnel and their belongings from the main road.
