MeECEL negligence leads to electrocution of teen

TURA:

Garo Hills has lost another innocent to negligence by Power department maintenance staff after a teenage girl was electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire in Nangalbibra region of South Garo Hills district on Thursday.

The incident occured at Nengbrek Village under Nangalbibra police station jurisdiction when the 19-year-old girl identified as Suritha N Sangma was heading to her plantation site outside the village.

The girl came in contact with a low lying live transmission power line as she passed through with saplings that she carried on her head.

There was little others accompanying her could do in the face of the electrocution.

Despite clear evidence of gross negligence from power corporation field staff who are meant to inspect power lines and ensure safety, the shocked family of the deceased have refrained from pursuing the case against the power corporation for its sheer negligence.

Garo Hills has a history of electrocution deaths spanning well over a decade, more so after the state MeSEB was bifurcated into three corporations.

While many innocent lives were lost, including travellers on village roads, those who survived have been left without limbs or bed-ridden for the rest of their lives.
