Meghalaya Assembly to explore AI for language translation in upcoming session

While acknowledging the assembly's progress towards a paperless system, Speaker Sangma mentioned that they are not yet at 100 per cent. Nevertheless, a significant portion of members have agreed to receive notifications in a paperless format.

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma on February 1 said that the assembly is seeking assistance from relevant agencies and experts to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the upcoming session.

The objective is to facilitate members to express themselves in the local language, and the focus is on exploring AI’s potential for translation. Sangma stressed the need for recognition of local languages such as Garo and Khasi-Jaintia and has enlisted experts to provide guidance. During the budget session, these agencies will be present to observe and offer suggestions.

While acknowledging the assembly’s progress towards a paperless system, Speaker Sangma mentioned that they are not yet at 100 per cent. Nevertheless, a significant portion of members have agreed to receive notifications in a paperless format.

In his role as the chair of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), Sangma disclosed that the assembly has approved three private members’ business days and five government business days. Additionally, he confirmed that the budget presentation is scheduled for February 21, with the session commencing on February 16 and concluding on the 27.
