Citing examples of Kongthong, the “Whistling Village”, and the role of the Shillong Chamber Choir, Modi spoke about the contribution of the people of Meghalaya in the fields of traditional art and music.

SHILLONG:

Congratulating the people of Meghalaya’s 50th Statehood Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on January 21, paid tribute to everyone who has contributed to the establishment and development of the state.

“Meghalaya has given the message of progress and eco-sustainability while retaining the spirit of conservation, rooted in nature,” said Modi in his virtual address to the people of the state.

Citing examples of Kongthong, the “Whistling Village”, and the role of the Shillong Chamber Choir, Modi spoke about the contribution of the people of Meghalaya in the fields of traditional art and music. He said that talented artistes from the region and their artistry have added to India’s incredibly diverse culture.

He added that the country has high hopes from the rich sports culture of Meghalaya, as well.

Noting the growth of organic farming in the state, Modi said, “Our sisters of Meghalaya have revived the art of bamboo weaving while hard-working farmers from the state are strengthening Meghalaya’s identity as an organic state.”

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment towards developing better roads, rail, and air connectivity in the state, he said, “The state government is working closely with us to access central schemes such as the PM Gramin Sadak Yojna and National Livelihood Mission, among others, for the benefit of the people of Meghalaya.” He also congratulated the state on becoming one of the first states in the country to use drones for vaccine delivery.
