Mukroh incident not to affect Assam-Meghalaya relationship: Himanta

“This incident took place because of certain officers or persons or because of certain local issues. It will not have any relation or problem in the broader landscape of the Assam-Meghalaya relationship,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

GUWAHATI:

Mukroh firing incident will not affect the broader landscape of the Assam-Meghalaya relationship, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said after the crucial cabinet meeting held in Silchar on November 29.

“This incident took place because of certain officers or persons or because of certain local issues. It will not have any relation or problem in the broader landscape of the Assam-Meghalaya relationship,” Sarma said.

Stating that police should use their weapons against terrorists, criminals not against innocent people, Sarma said, “Every time wherever police recruitment takes place, I always tell police to not use weapons against civilians. So I do not approve of the firing incident. Even if there is forest theft there could be other possible ways to prevent that. Taking the live of civilians is not appreciated.”

He said that both the governments are dutybound to secure the lives of citizens in Assam and the Meghalaya. “Meghalaya government never stopped the movement of buses or trucks, I have stopped it. It was the advisory of the Assam government to stop vehicles,” he also said.

“There is a constitutional boundary between Assam and Meghalaya. Maps are available to both states. I am sure that the Meghalaya government will not do anything in the constitutional boundary of the state of Assam. If they do something that will not have any legal validity. Suppose there is a police station and the police station takes up any case and somebody goes to the court how Meghala will have a police station in Assam’s territory all cases will be quashed by the High Court because of jurisdiction,” he said.

“We are negotiating any boundary adjustment that will happen through the committee which we have formed but I strongly believe that Meghalaya government will not come inside the constitutional boundary of Assam and Assam will also not enter into the constitutional boundary of Meghalaya,” Sarma said.

“There were discussions between the two states, minutes are there, till the dispute is resolved status quo will be maintained by the two states on the boundary,” Sarma also said.
