SHILLONG:
Garos living along the border between Garo Hills districts and Assam are forced to use Assam pin codes for all official purposes despite 50 years of statehood.
The issue was also raised by the Kharkutta legislator, Rupert Momin, in the just-concluded Assembly’s Budget session.
Momin told reporters that residents in the borders areas of Resubelpara, Kharkutta and Mendipathar in North Garo Hills have faced numerous problems because of a lack of Meghalaya pin codes.
“There is no separate pin code and people still have to use the Assam pin code for official purposes [since inception of the state]. This has created a lot of confusion,” he said.
The situation is especially dire for job applicants, as official communication sometimes does not reach the appropriate destination.
“We need our own permanent pin code at the earliest,” he asserted.
When asked, Momin said, “We discussed the issue last term but I did not get any reply; that is why I raised the issue in the Assembly recently.”
He said that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had assured that the department concerned will take up the matter.
