Pnars, Karbis hold peace meeting in Khanduli

District officials included WK Karbuli, Assistant Commissioner for the West Jaintia Hills, AJ Sangma, the DSP, and Border Magistrate Rakesh Thakur apologised on behalf of the Karbi Anglong District Administration.

SHILLONG:

A peace meeting between two communities, the Pnars and Karbis, residing along the Assam-Meghalaya border in the Khanduli area, was held at Khanduli Assam Battalion Camp on May 23.

The spoke person of Khanduli Peace Committee Pyrkhat Pyrphet, stated ,’The outcome of today’s meeting is that, we have decided to wage the official letter from the KAAC to remove the tax gate. Other than that we have also decided to make our Member of District Council(MDC) to communicate as clearly as possible for the betterment of the people living in this area. We expect both the council to agree and assure us an official letter to remove the tax gate.’

The peace process in the region was put on hold after representatives of Khanduli village disagreed to resolve the restriction of entry by Karbi people until the Karbi-Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) gave a written statement formally stating that the tax check gate was removed from the area, which is under Khanduli village’s jurisdiction.

Both parties came to an agreement during the peace talks that the Autonomous Council, the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), and the KAAC should all work together to settle the issue.

District officials included WK Karbuli, Assistant Commissioner for the West Jaintia Hills, AJ Sangma, the DSP, and Border Magistrate Rakesh Thakur apologised on behalf of the Karbi Anglong District Administration.
