Police intensifies crackdown on drug trafficking in West Tripura

SP, West District, Bogati Jagadeeshwar Reddy informed that in 2021, 5450 kgs of cannabis, 97,000 bottles of banned cough syrup, and 2337grams of heroin were seized.

AGARTALA:

Intensifying crackdown on drug traffickers in West Tripura, the district police has augmented the intelligence network to combat the menace in the region.

Speaking to The Meghalayan, Superintendent of Police, West District, Bogati Jagadeeshwar Reddy said that the department is taking multi-pronged steps to stop such activities.

“Considering the fact that the West district has about 25 per cent population and headquarters, more people are pouring in from outside. Perhaps this is why more such cases are being reported from there,” the SP said.

Giving details about the “multi-pronged steps” initiated by the police, the SP informed, “We are arresting people who are engaged in drugs. We have also improvised our intelligence so that we can arrest the suppliers rather than catching the middle man and consumers.”

He further said, “We are also looking at the inter-agency cooperation, as BSF is also serving in Tripura. Apart from that, we have CRPF, customs, and other agencies coordinating with the government.”

He informed that West district police seized about 970 grams of heroin from Agartala recently, which is the biggest haul in a single raid.

Reddy also shared data on drugs seized during various operations, which shows a significant increase in drug haul this year compared to 2020

“In 2021, the police registered 87 cases in the district compared to 86 in 2020. We arrested 191 persons in 2021 while 151 persons were arrested in 2020, he said.

He further revealed that 5450 kgs of cannabis, 97,000 bottles of banned cough syrup, and 2337grams of heroin were seized in 2021.
