Public Vigil

By The Editor

Being watchful and alert from beginning is very important otherwise it will lead to problems and complications afterward which may create more troubles ahead. Many people do not bother much with their lives if slight injuries occur due to accidents or if they are afflicted with minor diseases and continue with their daily activities as if nothing at all happens to them. Gradually, small and trifle pain become more serious and aggravated to the extent that it may lead to unbearable sickness in days to come which calls for greater attention costing time and money and that too with uncertainty of being healed. Therefore, it is highly essential for everyone to be always vigilant and immediately take remedial action before matters get out of control. Wise people say, “A spark neglected burns the house”. Nevertheless, many do not pay heed at all but once troubles come then they realise though quite late that they have to pay heavy price for their negligence. Relationships may turn sour and friendly neighbour into hostile ones which will take much time to restore normalcy and that too with bitterness and caution. True friendship will endure as long as there is mutual understanding and trust and in case of any misunderstanding at all then settlement to be reached amicably as early as possible. Frank Tyger said :”Good friends are like shock absorbers. They help you take the lumps and bumps on the road of life”.

Border issues arose mostly because authorities did not take proper care and attention right from the beginning itself who spent their time in celebrations and merriment. Leaders in the past did not possess much vision either out of ignorance or taking things for granted hoping that everything is alright and because of their lethargic attitude, present generation has to bear the burnt. It is to be borne in mind that many decades ago tribals were comparatively backward and illiterate who led simple life depending mostly on land for sustenance. Therefore, it is quite unfair to throw total blame on past leaders who had wholeheartedly fought for statehood. Heavy burden is to be carried by present leaders with support from general public and various stakeholders because without whose cooperation the problem is indeed very hard. We ought to learn lessons from the past and not to be complacent but to be constantly vigilant.

On November 3, residents of Noapara village in West Khasi Hills District and bordering Assam opposed road construction under MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Act) Scheme from Noapara village to Balwa Wari waterfalls by Assam government under Assam police surveillance along with supporters. After receiving information, Meghalaya Police from Langpih Camp followed by many agitating villagers from Noapara immediately rushed to the spot to stop the work along with intervention of Circle Officer, Boko,  Assam. Officers from both sides namely, D. Mawlein, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Mawshynrut and R. Kharkongor, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Mawshynrut Block from Meghalaya and Dibas Bordoloi, Circle Officer of Boko, met and resolved the matter amicably. It was further agreed that meeting will be convened by Dorbar of Noapara village with knowledge and cooperation from both states of Assam and Meghalaya.
