Pynursla battles plastic menace

PYNURSLA:

The picturesque village of Pynursla is battling a plastic menace as tons are dumped in a stream running along the market.

Riwar Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Organisation chairman and founder Restone Khongtani said that the main problem is not having a proper place for disposal of plastic waste.

“We are facing difficulties in clearing the plastic waste as there is no proper area for its disposal. We want to have a proper place to dispose waste,” he said.

The organisation has time and again conducted awareness programmes during market days four times a week.

The proper Pynursla market area is very dirty while the areas downstream are rather clean.
“We conduct awareness programmes on our own and fellow members pool in,” Khongtani said.

He said that the organisation wanted to conduct an awareness programme sometime in November but it was postponed due to Covid-19.

The organisation plans to come up with an awareness programme again in February. The organisation is glad that villages in Pynursla are coming forward and have begun to take up environmental issues.

There is no issue with bio-degradable waste but the problem is with plastics and bottles. The organisation wants to come up with a plan to recycle plastic.

“We are now reaching out to children as the future belongs to them and they will be the ones who will carry the legacy of cleanliness forward,” Khongtani said.

Riwar Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Organisationhas set up 42 units in and around Pynursla with a vision to transform its face.

There are some villages, however, that are clean such as Mawlynnong, Mawsohrisa, Mynrieng, and Kynton Sair.
