Residents oppose election of new headman of Wahsarang in EJH

The group had written to the JHADC on July 21 to disallow office bearers of the previous EC to take part in the electoral process, until their doubts are cleared.

SHILLONG:

The Sur u Paidbah, a representation of around 40 per cent of the residents of Wahsarang village in East Jaintia Hills district, has opposed the election of the Waheh Chnong (headman) of the village on July 25.

They claimed that there was no clarity in the implementation of various schemes amounting to Rs 15 lakh by the previous Executive Committee (EC) of the village, who included a few individuals who also contested in the election today.

The group has urged the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to temporarily suspend the election of the headman and to hand over the job to the acting Waheh Chnong for six months, until they received a definite answer to their queries through the Right to Information or RTI to expose the alleged corruption and misappropriation of funds by the previous EC.

The group had written to the JHADC on July 21 to disallow office bearers of the previous EC to take part in the electoral process, until their doubts are cleared.

The Sur u Paidbah, on July 24, alleged the previous Executive Committee (EC) of the Dorbar Shnong of seeking monetary help from former MLA Nehlang Lyngdoh to construct a football field in the name of the village’s sports club.

The group alleged that this is a mere ploy to cover up for the corrupt practices whereby, they claimed that the fund to construct a football field was sanctioned by the state government way back in 2014-15 through the football scheme; however, the field is yet to see the light of the day.

“We will not allow such corruption to have its roots in our village. If anyone comes forward to offer help or a football field at this juncture, while the issue is yet to be resolved, we will not stand back; we will not hesitate even approaching the court,” President of the Sur u Paidbah Shlurbha Khaii said.
