Guwahati:

Intensifying its war against poaching, the Assam Police, on February 2, announced cash rewards of Rs 2 lakh for inputs and information leading to the arrests of three wanted poachers and Rs 5 lakh for information leading to the recovery of the poached rhino horn.

The announcement comes fifteen days after Kaziranga National Park reported this year’s first case of poaching on January 19 after an adult female rhino carcass was recovered in the Hikekhonda Range of the park.

Special director general of police and chief of Anti-Rhino Poaching Task Force, GP Singh, taking to a popular micro-blogging website, uploaded three pictures of the poachers and said, “Wanted for rhino poaching reward of Rs 2 lakh– for information leading to arrest of each of them (sic),”

The poachers have been identified as Ataur Rahman (35) alias Bassa, Abdul Matin (36) alias Kala, and Asmat Ali (35) alias Nalco of village No 1 Adabheti and Milonpur, repectively, under the Sootea police station in Biswanath district.

Earlier, the Assam government had deployed 20 commando personnel as a part of the anti-poaching unit in the world-famous UNESCO Heritage Site after the killing was reported.
