NONGSTOIN:
The Save Hynniewtrep Mission (SHM) which comprises of five pressure groups of the state held a protest rally on December 2 at Mawshynrut in West Khasi Hills district.
The groups include the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP).
The protesters condemned the government for not fulfilling their nine-long pending demands under Save Hynniewtrep Mission.
The demands include the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the inclusion of Khasi Language in the 8th Schedule, the immediate relocation of the Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong, review of the MoU signed under the first phase of border talks with Assam, to punish the police officials involved in the killing of ex-HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, resolving unemployment crisis, reviewing the office memorandum on job recruitment at the district level among others.
SHM leader and HYC general secretary, Roy Kupar Synrem said that it is almost three years now since the state government passed the resolution for implementing ILP, however, the Central government is yet to implement it in our state.
He further stated that the state government has announced the setting up of a Border Outpost (BOP) on the inter-state border however, it was learned that the BOP will be set up in the villages and not in the sensitive areas bordering Assam.
Synrem demanded that if the government wants to set up a police outpost it should be fully functional with full authority and equipment in order to safeguard the people living in border areas.
Others who also spoke in the meeting were president HYC, WKHD, Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh, WKHD HANM president, Wilstone Sohshang among others.
