Scientific coal mining to start in Meghalaya soon as centre approves 4 licenses

“Once we have the public hearing, forest clearance, and the mining plan approved which are just procedural aspects, approvals for which will be done in the next 30-45 days then the green signal for starting of scientific mining is through,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told media persons.

SHILLONG:

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on May 2, informed that Meghalaya has overcome the biggest hurdle for starting the process of scientific coal mining in the state as the Government of India has approved mining lease to four miners.

“Once we have the public hearing, forest clearance, and the mining plan approved which are just procedural aspects, approvals for which will be done in the next 30-45 days then the green signal for starting of scientific mining is through,” Sangma told media persons.

Stating that the approval of the leases was a major step to start the process of scientific mining, Sangma maintained that everything will proceed accordingly, with technical aspects and technology being implemented as per the plan.

Asked if the approval of the mining leases is an indication of good sign for the state’s economy, the CM expressed optimism stating that at least a direction and clarity has been given by the centre on mining.

“From here onwards we just have to ensure that we keep improving on those provisions, we keep expanding, we give more licenses and leases, and that way we will see the mining sector grow in the way it was before the NGT ban, “Sangma added.

The chief minister also said that after May 15 the government will hold a series of meetings with all parties, civil societies, other stakeholders at the state level and district level on the matter, and how things should move ahead.
