Second phase of border talks with Assam next month, regional committees formed

Khanduli and Psiar, Block 1 and Block 2, Borduar, Langpih, Nongwah- Mawtamur, and Desh Doomreah, are being taken up in the second phase.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on March 22, informed the House that Regional Committees for the second phase of border talks with Assam on the next six areas of differences have been constituted, and the talks will be held next month.

Informing the House during the Special Motion brought by Congress legislator Charles Marngar, the Chief Minister informed that the Ri-Bhoi Regional Committee will be led by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong as chairperson, Sosthenus Sohtun National People’s Party (NPP) MLA from Jirang, Mayralborn Syiem United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA from Nongpoh, Charles Marngar Congress MLA from Mawhati, Jambor War Executive Member in-charge Elaka of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council as members and Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner as member convenor.

The West Khasi Hills Regional Committee will consist of Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh as the chairperson, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar UDP MLA from Mawkyrwat, Methodious Dkhar Hill State People’s Democratic Party MLA from Mawshynrut, Gigur Myrthong Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, Bajop Pyngrope Rambrai-Jyrngam KHADC MDC as members and West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner as member convenor.

Meanwhile, the West Jaintia Hills Regional Committee will be headed by Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar as the chairperson, the members would be Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon, Lahkmen Rymbui UDP MLA from Amlarem, Nujorki Sungoh UDP MLA Mowkaiaw, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member, Thombor Shiwat, Aiborlang Shadap JHADC MDC and West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner as member convenor.

The Chief Minister also informed the House that the first round of talks with Assam for the next six areas of differences will be initiated sometime in April-May.

Khanduli and Psiar, Block 1 and Block 2, Borduar, Langpih, Nongwah- Mawtamur, and Desh Doomreah, are being taken up in the second phase.

The first phase of talks in which six areas with ‘less complications’ were taken up and a MoU was signed between the two states at New Delhi on March 29, 2022. These are Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilangkata, Ratacherra.
