Residents of Nongkroh village, in Rambrai, West Khasi Hills, on Thursday, spotted several dead fish floating in the Rambrai River.
Suspecting it to be a poisoning case, the villagers said miscreants may have poured chemicals into the river which killed the fish.
Village headman, Earnest Lyngkhoi informed such incidents have occurred in the past, adding, “The village dorbar has prohibited the illegal killing of fish in water bodies with explosives, fishing nets or poisonous chemicals.”
While the village authority has condemned the act and issued a warning, “If found, they will be dealt with strictly”, the village dorbar along with the Federation of Khasi Jaintia& Garo People and Khasi Students’ Union has filed a complaint at Nongstoiñ Police Station.
