State film draft policy submitted

The main objective of the film policy is to promote emerging talent, generate new employment opportunities, and increase financial investments in the film.

SHILLONG:

State filmmakers have submitted a drafted Meghalaya State Film Policy to minister-in-charge of Information & Public Relations Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Monday.

The main objective of the film policy is to promote emerging talent, generate new employment opportunities, and increase financial investments in the film. In a sector that operates mostly unrestricted, it can also outline the boundaries of government interference. In order to further overall development, cinema policy contributes to the creation of a favourable climate that not only encourages large-scale film production in the state but also supports other associated industries.

Over the past 20 years, Meghalaya’s film industry has grown steadily but the state is yet to get a film policy.

With this in mind, a Film Policy Summit of filmmakers from all across the state was arranged on March 9 by the mass media department at St Anthony’s College and the mass communication department at NEHU to share ideas and discuss the film policy. Suggestions were exchanged between participants in the debates including filmmakers, academics, fans, critics, and other interested parties.

After the summit, the proposed policy was also posted on www.massmediashillong.com so that the public could learn about it and offer additional feedback.

The members of the summit were also hopeful that the government will respond to the proposal and adopt the policy. The members also said that it will go a long way in supporting budding film industry, boost the revenue of the State and generate employment for the youth.
