Supporters of rival parties TMC and NPP have clashed in a village under the Phulbari constituency during campaigning late Tuesday night leading to nine persons sustaining minor injuries.
According to a report from the District Election Officer of West Garo Hills, the incident took place at around 10.45 pm at Charbatapara village where a scuffle broke out between TMC and NPP supporters in which the TMC MLA of Phulbari S G Esmatur Mominin was present on the TMC side alongside two other party leaders Moni Mondol and Bhuttu, while on the NPP side, it was the GHADC MDC Habibur Zaman and his supporters.
Police teams from Phulbari police station were dispatched to the place of the incident which led to a control of the situation.
A total of nine persons were sent for medical examination at Phulbari CHC but all were discharged after an examination.
One of the injured participants had been referred for further medical treatment due to an injury close to the eye.
In an FIR submitted by one Nojrul Hussain of Charbatapara believed to be a TMC supporter, he alleged that a procession led by Habibur Zaman (NPP) stopped near his house and pelted stones at his house due to which 4 persons got injured.
However, another reason for the clash has emerged. It was reported to have happened after MDC Habibur Zaman and his supporters who were passing through the village were attacked with stones by suspected TMC supporters which damaged his Scorpio vehicle leading to the clash.
The situation is currently under control, informed authorities and, an investigation is underway.
