Top ULFA-I leader Sangram Saikia surrenders in Guwahati

He joined the outfit in June 1995 when he was a student of BA at Sonari College.

GUWAHATI:

United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I)’s top leader, self-styled Major Bubul Chandra Baruah alias Sangram Saikia surrendered before the Additional Director General (Special Branch) Hiren Chandra Nath at his office in Kahilipara on February 2.

48-year-old Sangram Saikia hails from Miripathar Bhojo Village under Sonapri police station in Upper Assama’s Charaideo district.

He joined the outfit in June 1995 when he was a student of BA at Sonari College.

He underwent armed and medical training in Konyak area and Taga camps in Mynmar, later, he conducted training of newly-recruited cadres at the two camps.

Since 2011, Sangram Saikia has been the chief of the Konyak area and Taga camp and providing armed and medical training to the new cadres.

From 2011 to 2019, Sangram provided armed training to more than 700 cadres in 18 various groups. In addition to this, he provided medical training to 150 cadres under 17 various groups.

In 2018 he was promoted to Major rank.

“Sangram Saikia had also come to contact with top leaders, including Paresh Asom, Michal Deka Phukan, Nayan Asom, Ganesh Asom and Golap Asom,” said a senior police official.

His surrender is a big relief for the security agencies of the state, the official added.
