Tripura by-poll: Police arrest 16 after polls for attempting electoral offenses

Patrolling by police is continuing to maintain peace and tranquility in the state.

AGARTALA:

The Tripura Police, on June 23, arrested 16 persons in Agartala under preventive sections for their involvement in attempted electoral offenses.

In a press statement released on June 24, the Tripura Police said barring some instances of reported intimidation of voters at a few places under 6-Agartala and 8-Town Bardowali constituencies and a stabbing incident, voting was peaceful.

“Total 16 persons have been arrested at Agartala under preventive sections for involvement in attempted electoral offenses. However, no complaint has been lodged by any Presiding Officer or Returning Officer so far. A few instances of atrocities by political rowdies upon aged persons including media people have been noticed in social media. But no complaint has been received by police in this regard from anyone for taking specific investigation,” the statement read.

The police also said so far no report of violence or intimidation has been received following the election, and patrolling by police is continuing to maintain peace and tranquility in the state.

They further said that during the poll long queues were noticed in all the 221 polling stations where elections took place and the casting of votes was also quite high.

Regarding an incident that had taken place under NCC Police station in Agartala around 09:00 am, the police said one voter, namely Samir Saha of Kunjaban Colony under 6-Agartala Assembly Constituency, was stopped by four miscreants while he was going from his house to exercise his franchise. One of the miscreants inflicted injuries on him by using a paper cutter after failing to intimidate him by threatening.

“He sustained injuries on his abdomen and right-hand elbow and is presently undergoing treatment at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant hospital Trauma centre. He is a police person who was on leave. A specific case has been registered and stern action will be taken against the miscreants after identification,” a police officer said.
