Tripura by-polls voting underway; CM Manik Saha casts his vote

The poll in these four seats will continue till 5 PM.

Agartala:

The bye-election in Tripura’s four assembly constituencies started this morning at 7 AM amidst tight security.

The bye-elections are being held in four seats including in 6-Agartala, 8-Town Bordowali, and 46-Surma and 57-Jubarajnagar assembly constituencies.

The poll in these four seats will continue till 5 PM. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha was one of the 1st to cast his vote.

A total of 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Force were deployed along with Tripura State Rifle Jawan (TSR) and Tripura Police.

As many as 1, 89,032 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to decide the electoral fate of 22 candidates in the fray.

The seats in 6-Agartala and 8-Town Bordowali were vacant after former BJP Minister Sudip Roy Barman and BJP MLA Asish Kumar Saha quit BJP and joined Congress.

While Surma seat in Dhalai district fell vacant after BJP legislator, Asish Das was disqualified by Speaker Ratan Chakraborty and a by-poll to Jubarajnagar was necessitated following the death of sitting CPI(M) MLA Ramendra Chandra Debnath.

Earlier, a Police personnel identified as Samir Saha was stabbed in broad daylight while he was going with his family to exercise their franchise in Kunjaban area in Agartala constituency, on June 23.

Samir Saha, who is attached to Gandacherra Police Station in the Dhalai district, has been admitted to a hospital and his condition is stated to be stable.

Notably, Around 51.77 % of 1.89 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 2. P.M in by-polls to four assembly constituencies in Tripura.
