Tripura police seized narcotics worth Rs 62.95 cr, held 1655 in last three years

The Tripura Police have arrested 1655 drug peddlers and seized contraband items amounting to Rs 62.95 crores in the last three years.

The information was shared during the question-answer session on the second day of the ongoing Tripura Legislative Assembly, on March 21.

In response to the question asked by ruling BJP MLAs Kalyani Roy and Ranjit Das, the home department, which is under chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, informed that between 2019 and 2021, the police have arrested the said number of persons for selling, consumption and trafficking of contraband items such as cannabis, heroin and yaba tablets.

The report further informed that in 2019, 2020 and 2021, the police have seized 15117 kg, 127284.46 kg and 41,565 kg of cannabis worth Rs 7.55 crore, Rs 6.36 crore and Rs 20.78 crore, respectively.

In 2019, the police seized 90,593 bottles of banned cough syrup worth Rs 1.22 crore followed by 19,0943 bottles worth Rs 2.57 crore in 2020 and in 2021, police seized 20,6,939 bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 2.79 crores.

Intensifying the war on drugs, the police in 2019, seized 4278.96 grams of heroin worth Rs 4.27 crores which came down to 2162.351 grams worth Rs 2.16 crore in 2020 and in 2021, the police seized 3850.63 grams of the contraband which cost around Rs 3.85 crore in the international market.

In 2019, the police seized 21, 23, 163 Yaba tablets worth Rs 10.61 crores, then in 2020, the number came down to 58, 4119 tablets worth Rs 2.92 crore, and in 2021, around 14, 19, 169 tablets worth Rs 7.09 were seized.
