In a bid to protect children from abuse and prevent child marriage and labour, the Tripura government is gearing up to set child rights clubs in all higher secondary schools across the state.
The club will comprise of teachers, students from senior classes and people from neighbouring villages to report on any kind of exploitation, informed Nilima Ghosh, chairperson of Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TCPCR), on April 26.
“We have already spoken to the education minister Ratan Lal Nath in this regard, and soon all necessary steps would be taken to open such clubs at the school level. We will give some funds from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights for these clubs. The clubs will report to us for timely action,” Ghosh said.
The chairperson also informed that the TCPCR has also informed the school education department if they need councillors to visit schools for sessions with students.
Apart from that, she said, the TCPCR has also decided on future plans that will include regular visits to schools, extensive awareness programmes on child marriage in the school level, regular visits to homes, schools, and hostels to get a sense of the situation.
Ghosh also informed that, so far, the commission has conducted an awareness programme on child marriage in 12 schools and for the remaining ones, the programme will be conducted after the conclusion of exams.
