Tura lady engineer dies in Boko road accident

Tura, Feb 24: A lady engineer of Meghalaya’s power department tragically lost her life when the vehicle she was travelling in dashed against a cement truck that had broken down on the national highway 17 road in Boko reserve forest area late Friday night.

The 55 year old victim, Smt. Chonmei Rani T Sangma was returning from Shillong to Tura with her husband H P N Sangma on the wheel when their Honda HR-V car (ML08 F 0821) slammed against a cement truck that had broken down on the road in the forest reserve near Boko Shiv Mandir.

The incident occurred around 9:45 PM and the impact was most felt on the passenger side which dashed and went inside the back of the truck.

The truck was without the mandatory reflector strips on its back portion that otherwise could have alerted drivers coming from behind.

The critically injured victim and her husband were first taken to Boko health centre and from there taken to Critical Care Hospital in Lokhra, Guwahati but sadly passed away around 3:45 AM. Her husband, who is an engineer with the Urban Affairs Department, survived the ordeal. His late wife’s body is being brought back to Tura for the final rites. She leaves behind her young children.

The NH-17 stretch from Krishnai-Dudhnoi- to Boko has for long been a major accident prone zone and many travellers from Garo Hills have lost their lives during the journey. In a majority of cases the accidents have occured during the night time when travelling is challenging on the highway.
