Tynsong plea for peaceful protest

His statement came soon after the clash broke out between HITO activists and police while they were trying forcefully to take out a protest march from Sadar police station towards the Secretariat after their president Donbok Dkhar was summoned by the investigating officer (IO) in connection with a case related to the wearing of black uniforms.

SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong, on September 4, appealed to people to protest peacefully as police cannot just be mere spectators of lawlessness.

“I appeal to all citizens of the state, be it NGOs, please don’t cross the limit. The law is in place and we will do whatever necessary to be done,” Tynsong told reporters.

His statement came soon after the clash broke out between HITO activists and police while they were trying forcefully to take out a protest march from Sadar police station towards the Secretariat after their president Donbok Dkhar was summoned by the investigating officer (IO) in connection with a case related to the wearing of black uniforms.

According to police, the incident had led to the assault of a magistrate and 3 police personnel while a deputy superintendent of police sustained head injury due to the stones pelted by the protesters. At least 10 HITO activists have been arrested so far.

“I appeal to all if you protest, protest peacefully there is no need to be violent as law is there. If police take action, they say police are doing the wrong thing but is it fair for police to just be mere spectators (of lawlessness),” Tynsong said.

When asked, the deputy chief minister said, “Don’t always say the public gets beaten up by the police but you also look at police getting beaten up by the public.”

He said that the government allows people to protest democratically as per the Constitution of India “but we cannot allow them to take the law into their own hands”.
