UDP nomination panel to recommend names for party posts

Asked if the present set-up will continue, he said, “Let's see what happens, what the nomination committee recommends.”

SHILLONG:

United Democratic Party (UDP) working president and Arts and Culture minister Paul Lyngdoh said on Saturday that the party’s nomination committee recommends the names for each of the different positions including that of the president and it is entirely up to the nomination committee.

Asked whether he was in the race for the president’s post, Lyngdoh said that the party does not have a system where the members contest because there is a nomination committee in place.

He added that the nomination committee recommends the names for each of the different positions including that of the party president and it is entirely up to the nomination committee.

Asked if the present set-up will continue, he said, “Let’s see what happens, what the nomination committee recommends.”

The general council meeting of the UDP is scheduled to be held on July 29.

Recently, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh had claimed that there is a general consensus among the party leaders and workers that the incumbent president Metbah Lyngdoh should continue to lead the party as president.

“To be very frank, Metbah has really provided the direction for the party and we still repose our faith in him as a leader,” he had said.

“Metbah as a leader of the party has been successful in reorganizing the party, in strengthening the party,” Mawthoh had said while citing that the party was able to increase the number of seats in the Assembly from 6 in 2018 to 12 in 2023 and is presenting having 10 MDCs in the KHADC and 7 MDCs in the JHADC.

He had also added that under Lyngdoh’s leadership, the party has provided the much-needed stability in the state as well as in the two ADCs.
