SHILLONG:
General Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Jemino Mawthoh, on May 13, maintained that the party’s win at Sohiong will strengthen its position in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition.
The general secretary’s assurance comes in the wake of NPP Sohiong leaders challenging UDP to leave the coalition during the recent election campaigns in various parts of Sohiong constituency.
Speaking to The Meghalayan, he said, “People still like the grand old regional party. Now, that we are 12 in numbers, it will strengthen the party in the coalition.”
As for grassroot politics and the heavy mudslinging between UDP and NPP at Sohiong during electioneering, Mawthoh said that it is difficult to contain constituency-level spat but maintained that senior party leaders did display political maturity.
