UDP core committee to fine-tune views on quota policy, roster system

Speaking to media persons, UDP leader Jemino Mawtoh said that party has agreed to authorise the UDP core committee to incorporate views and suggestions given by the members so that the core committee can fine tune and articulate all the suggestions.

SHILLONG:

The United Democratic Party (UDP) will submit its suggestions to the committee on reservation policy and roster system after a few days after making necessary improvements in its observations.

Speaking to reporters after the party’s central executive committee (CEC) here, on Friday general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said that they had sat several times with legal experts, scholars and party functionaries to get their views and suggestions to come out with a formula or suggestion which would be acceptable to all the reserved categories in the state.

“We have tried to articulate and come out with observations on our part. In fact, we have come out with eight observations and today we presented that in the CEC. But some more points were raised in the CEC and finally it was agreed to authorise the core committee of the party to incorporate the views and suggestions that were given by the members today (Friday) so that it will fine-tune and articulate all the suggestions given by the members who came different districts of the state,” Mawthoh said.

He did not disclose the eight observations and said that the party would make it public in the next three-four days.

Mawthoh maintained that thorough discussions were held on the office memorandums, including the documents from 1972, be it from the principal resolution of the reservation policy and all the office memorandums, besides the amendments made thereof.

He added that the party discussed the matter from the standpoint of the Constitution, education, economics and education.

“Our stand is very clear, that the roster system should be implemented prospectively, that is from the date of issue of the latest notification of the office memorandum,” he said.

He recalled that review of the reservation policy has been in the manifesto of the party and observed it was a good opportunity to give its views.

It may be mentioned that the committee on reservation policy headed by Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh comprising all political parties of the state had solicited views and suggestions from the different political parties.

Recently, Lyngdoh said that the committee was waiting for all the political parties to send in their observations.

Cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh said that the roster system will be implemented prospectively.

Addressing media persons, Lyngdoh said that the new office memorandum (OM) on roster system issued on June 14 has superseded the OM of 2022, which spoke about implementation of the roster system retrospectively.

“The latest OM says it (roster) will be from the date that this OM is issued meaning it is prospectively,” he said.
