UDP submits suggestions to roster committee

The party met the chairperson of the committee on reservation policy and roster system, Ampareen Lyngdoh, to present the observations made by the party on reservation policy and the roster system.

SHILLONG:

The United Democratic Party (UDP) submitted eight suggestions to the committee on reservation policy and roster system on Friday.

The party met the chairperson of the committee on reservation policy and roster system, Ampareen Lyngdoh, to present the observations made by the party on reservation policy and the roster system.

The general secretary of the party, Jemino Mawthoh, did not disclose the suggestions but maintained that the party has recommended changes in the policy.

He also recalled that the party’s manifesto for the last Assembly elections had called for review of the reservation policy.

Informing that the party has come up with a formula that will be acceptable for the three major tribes – the Khasis, the Jaintias and the Garos – he said that the party engaged academicians, legal experts, and experts in other fields to draw views from them.

“Finally, we came up with eight observations on our part and we want these observations made on the part of the UDP so that the government and expert committee will examine this thoroughly so that it will be for the benefit of the people of the state. We have done it in such a way that we feel that our observations will be non-discriminatory and acceptable to all the reserved categories in the state of Meghalaya,” Mawthoh said.

The party hoped that at least the committee can have deliberations on the points suggested by the party.
