Border dispute shuts schools in state

Education minister Rakkam A Sangma told reporters on Friday that while one-two schools had to be closed, construction of an SSA school had to be stopped due to the border dispute with Assam.

The border dispute with Assam has forced a couple of schools to close down in the state.

Education minister Rakkam A Sangma told reporters on Friday that while one-two schools had to be closed, construction of an SSA school had to be stopped due to the border dispute with Assam.

The minister on Friday chaired a review meeting with officials of the department.

He said one of the government lower primary schools, which has been closed down and which has around 30 students and three teachers, is located in East Jaintia Hills. Due to this, the students have to be shifted to nearby schools.

The minister said he would soon take up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

“We will bring it to the knowledge of the chief minister so that he can take up with the government of Assam as the issue has to be sorted out in the interest of the students,” he said.

Sangma said while states could have boundaries there should not be any boundaries for teaching and learning and helping the children. “As a minister of the state I feel that teaching and shaping the future of students, we should not have any boundaries,” he said

The minister also informed that he had asked the department officers to keep in touch with the deputy commissioner of the concerned district and get a report on the matter.

Meanwhile, Sangma said that the review meeting was held to understand the problems faced by the department and to find solutions.

The meeting also highlighted the lack of basic infrastructure, toilet facilities for boys and girls, water facilities etc in the different schools.
