The United Democratic Party (UDP) has brushed off claims of the Congress that there will not be any sympathy for the former’s party candidate in the upcoming election to the Sohiong Assembly seat, which was earlier adjourned due to the demise of its candidate HDR Lyngdoh.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh was reacting to the claims of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president that there will not be any sympathy for UDP candidate, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah.
Mawthoh said that HDR Lyngdoh had served Sohiong for three decades and he was “loved and adored” by the public there.
“You cannot say he has done nothing for Sohiong or the state. A lot of expectations were placed on him by the people of the constituency to win when he took the decision to join the UDP,” the party general secretary said.
He said when such a well-known person passes away, there is bound to be a wave of sympathy.
Mawthoh also said if Lyngdoh had not passed away, he would have certainly won as per all indications and the party’s inputs from Sohiong.
“If one says that there will not be any sympathy wave, I don’t think it will be like that,” the UDP general secretary added.
Mawthoh also informed that the party is aggressively campaigning for the nephew of Lyngdoh.
The UDP general secretary said that the party was carrying forward the momentum in the campaigning that it had when Lyngdoh was alive.
“The UDP circle in Sohiong has campaigned vigorously in all the areas of the constituency then and it continues to do so even now. Party leaders including MLAs and MDCs are campaigning there as we speak,” Mawthoh informed.
The election will be held on May 10.
