Umiam reservoir water level close to danger mark

Once the water rises to the danger level at around 3216 feet, it is then released after the population downstream is alerted.

SHILLONG:

Incessant rainfall over the past few days has filled the Umiam reservoir almost to the brim besides triggering floods and landslides in most areas of the state which have claimed 20 lives till June 18.

A check on the marker in the reservoir revealed that the water level has risen to 3210 feet (at 3 pm on Saturday), and has completely submerged its banks.

The areas along the banks, which are usually filled with picnickers and tourists, have also been submerged due to the heavy rainfall.

Once the water rises to the danger level at around 3216 feet, it is then released after the population downstream is alerted.

Earlier, social media had been abuzz with news that the footpath along the bridge of the dam had been damaged, but the news turned out to be false.
