SHILLONG:
Incessant rain in the last few days has raised the water level in the Umiam dam.
According to officials, as of 8 pm on July 2, the water level has risen to 3197.47 feet while the maximum level of the dam is 3220 feet.
The Meteorological department on Sunday predicted more rain in the state.
“Heavy rain, thundershowers, very heavy rain and extremely heavy rain is most likely to occur at most places over East Khasi Hills in next 24 hours,” the National Disaster Management Agency stated in an alert.
Earlier, the receding water level at Umiam Lake was causing serious concern among residents of Meghalaya.
Experts had stated that only rainfall can bring relief from the sweltering heat and perhaps load-shedding.
Recently, with receding water level and no rain, the old Umiam road was seen.
However, with more rain predicted, residents are confident that the water level on the Umiam dam will rise and thereby give people respite from load-shedding.
