War of words between cops, HNYF members

The HNYF leaders and family members had gone to the police station following the arrest of nine HNYF members on Tuesday morning from Umpling.

Shillong:

Heated arguments ensued between leaders of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and personnel of the Sadar police station after one of the latter allegedly used foul language.

The HNYF leaders and family members had gone to the police station following the arrest of nine HNYF members on Tuesday morning from Umpling.

The members were picked up by police for allegedly causing chaos and assaulting people in Khyndailad.

The HNYF leaders alleged that the members were dragged from their houses and taken to the police station.

They further questioned the way the arrests were made and asked as to why the police stormed their homes and dragged their members instead of notifying the family before arresting them.

The police said that a case was registered following an FIR filed by some people. The police informed the HNYF leaders that the arrested members assaulted vendors and vandalised materials.

“One of the persons caught them red-handed and one of the kongs (lady) filed the FIR,” police personnel said.

The parents of the arrested persons claimed that the police stormed their homes, but this was refuted.

HNYF East Khasi Hills president Bless Dkhar told the police personnel, “You should have entered with respect. Why don’t you go to the border areas?”

Later, a senior police official said that the statement of the HNYF leaders can be recorded.
