Umsning:
To create awareness about drug abuse, the Seng Samla Shnong Umsning Patarim organised a one-day workshop on the detrimental effects of drugs and alcohol on society and to encourage students to pursue higher education at Umsning Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, on September 8.
During the workshop, they also recognised students who had achieved success in various examinations during the academic year 2022–2023.
Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA Umsning Constituency graced the workshop as chief guest in the presence of Marcus Marten President HNYF Northern Region, James Hitler Mawphniang General Secretary of KSU North Khasi Hills District Unit, officials from Umsning Police Station, and the office bearers of Umsning Town Dorbar among others.
Speaking on the occassion, Lyngdoh stressed on eradicating the menace of drugs as youths are getting addicted to it.
“I used to ask where these drug addicts come from? The only answer is they come from our family, and the reasons why they fall into drugs may be many, but to eradicate drugs we need joint efforts,” Lyngdoh said.
Likewise, Mawphniang Said ” Everything starts from the family, and the best way to control drug abuse is to make children aware about the detrimental effects of drug abuse.”
He said that drug addicts should not be stigmatised and must be supported to get out of the trap.
Sharing his experience, counsellor and a founder of Wisdom Centre Umdihar, Pastor David Jamis said that most of the drug addicts are youths of single mother.
“To eradicate drugs, we should revive every angle of society. Being an Addict myself in the past year, I understand how difficult it is to come out from the trap because the desires do not go away easily,” he said.
