Youths detained in Jaiaw assault case

When asked if the youths, who were detained, belong to a particular organization, Syiem, however, said, “People can be affiliated to any organisation that is not what matters. What matters is whether they are involved or not, we have to establish that.”

SHILLONG:

The police, on June 28, detained a few youths for their alleged involvement in the assault of two persons from Kerala at Jaiaw on June 24.

Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said that since the process of identifying those involved in the incident is on, not much can be revealed at this point.

“It is strictly based on identification of people who had been involved in that crime (and they) have been picked up,” he said, adding that the police are investigating all sides and are considering evidences such as eye witnesses and CCTV footages.

Refusing to divulge more details with regard to the number of youths that have been picked up, Syiem said, “I can (only) say that we are on the right track and positive results are (coming) in.” He also brushed off rumours that 10 persons have been detained by the police in connection with the case. “There is no truth to these rumours,” he said.

When asked if the youths, who were detained, belong to a particular organization, Syiem, however, said, “People can be affiliated to any organisation that is not what matters. What matters is whether they are involved or not, we have to establish that.”

Earlier on June 24, a group of 30 youths allegedly assaulted the two persons – Rejaz Sydeek and Sarath Thambi, who are interns of Impulse NGO Network.
