2 Bangladeshi nationals imprisoned for 5 years for illegally entering India

GUWAHATI:

Two Bangladeshi nationals were imprisoned for five years for illegally entering India at Mankachar in Lower Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district on August 19.

While issuing the judgement, the District and Session Judge of South Salmara-Mankachar, Syed Imdadur Rahman also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them. Failure to pay the fine will lead to another six months imprisonment for both.

“Abdul Hai, son of Afsar Ali Mandal, a resident of Behuler Char village under Roumari police station in Bangladesh’s Kurigram district, had come to India on March 3, 2021. He was arrested by a police patrol party from Behulachar area along the Indo-Bangladesh border at around 6:30 pm and forwarded to judicial custody in connection with Mankachare PS case no 163/21. Accordingly, the court took cognizance against him. We have examined six witnesses. The defence lawyer was Lutfur Rahman. And today the court gave its final judgement,” public prosecutor Biswhajit Mahanta said.

“Another accused was Niranjan Ghosh, son of Ranjit Ghosh, a resident of Gaber gram village under Madergunj police station in Jamalpur district. He was arrested by Mankachar police on March 25, 2021, from Smashan Mandir at Mankachar at around 1 pm. He was forwarded to judicial custody in connection with case No 395/2021. Accordingly, the court framed a charge against him. We have examined six witnesses. The defence lawyer failed to produce any evidence and the court convicted him today,” Mahanta added.
