Rain likely in Assam, Meghalaya for next 24 hrs

GUWAHATI:

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), on August 19, predicted moderate rain in Assam, Meghalaya, and other places in the Northeast which would provide a much-needed breather from the soaring temperatures in the region for the last few weeks.

“Moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at many places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at few places over Arunachal Pradesh,” said Dr Sanjay O’Neil Shaw, Deputy Director General, RMC-IMD at Borjhar.

The RMC also predicted thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and heavy rainfall in isolated places of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

“Guwahati may expect a shower or two but most places will have a partly cloudy sky and temperatures may soar up to 37 degrees celsius owing to the low hanging clouds, though it is expected to be pleasant by night,” Dr Shaw said.

The northeast is expected to witness a sprinkle or two over the next five days.

Notably, the IMD had a few days ago said that it is getting difficult to predict the weather as the climate has changed all charts and patterns and now it is not as accurate as it used to be.

The Northeast especially Assam is losing its green cover because rainfall has become infrequent and temperatures have seen a new high.
