Police detained 27 Bangladeshis in 52 days

A Bangladeshi national was apprehended while some others managed to escape, police informed.

According to East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, on July 28 morning around 6:30 am, police received credible input that few Bangladeshi nationals would try to intrude illegally into Indian territory through jungle and the unfenced parts of the Indo-Bangla border.

Dhanoa said that a joint operation was launched by police team from Umkiang PPP led by in-charge, sub-inspector S Buam and team from Ratacherra Anti-Infiltration Check Post led by sub-inspector E Pohchen and assisted by the BSF party from Umkiang border out post to nab the illegal intruders.

The SP informed that while the police team was on the look out to nab the intruders, they spotted one person who came from the jungle area near the village of Pyrtakuna and hopped inside one grey color Alto vehicle bearing registration number AS-11-CC-4582.

“On seeing the police team and the BSF troop they tried to speed away but the team managed to intercept the vehicle at Kuliang village after a hot chase and apprehended the driver and the passenger,” Dhanoa said.

On questioning, the driver who was identified as Warif Uddin Laskar from Sarapur, Gumrah, Assam but he could not provide satisfactory reply and on further questioning of the passenger he seemed lost and spoke only in Bengali.

The SP said that with the help of some locals who understood and spoke Bengali, the passenger disclosed his identity as one Masum Uddin from Bangladesh and he further revealed that there were some more Bangladeshi nationals who entered Indian territory illegally but fled inside the jungle on seeing the BSF party.

The district police chief said that in this regard, the BSF party has been alerted and a combing operation is on to nab the other illegal intruders.

Later, the driver and the passenger were taken to Lumshnong police station for taking further necessary action and a case under sections 13 and 14 Foreigners Act has been registered and investigation is in progress.

The police informed that in the past 52 days, 26 Bangladeshi nationals who crossed over illegally into Indian territory have been arrested in East Jaintia Hills distríct and four cases has been registered and necessary action has been taken as per law.
